1. TAP into a movie (Thursday)
This Thursday, February 9th, the Food Council will be screening the movie Tapped.
This documentary examines the world of bottled water and its surprising
effects on both the environment and our health. The movie starts at 7
PM in the library on the second floor of Thatcher Brook Primary School
and runs a little over an hour. Donations are suggested, but not
required. There will be free popcorn during the movie, followed by a
brief discussion. Can’t make this show? Add our last movie to your
calendar now: How to Cook Your Life on March 15. For more information, visit the Waterbury Duxbury Food Council’s website: www.wdfoodcouncil.org.
2. TAP into the Farmers' Market (Saturday)
This weekend's Waterbury Winter Farmers' Market is a great opportunity to get ready for Valentine's Day -- on Saturday, Feb. 11th in the TBPS Cafeteria, 10am - 2pm.
You'll find chocolate-making demonstrations, local farm products,
handmade gifts, live music by Rob Desaro, the Waterbury Community
Valentine Project, and a chance to make a valentine for your valentine. See you at the market!
3. TAP into Waterbury's Long Term Recovery (next Thursday)
Have you been a part of Watebrury's long-term recovery conversations? It's not too late to give your input! Come out to the Waterbury Community Fair on Thursday, February 16th to
hear about the projects that are being proposed to help guide our
community's recovery. Nineteen projects ideas have been drawn up,
including a Food System Development project to strengthen our food
system businesses, increase the production and availability of local
food, and serve as an engine of economic development for our town. At
the community fair, the public will get a chance to vote on the
projects they believe would best revitalize and rebuild our community. The Community Fair will be held from 6:30 to 8:30pm at Thatcher Brook Primary School. |

Or know someone that does? A sign at Shaw's supermarket says they are looking for a local pig farmer to take their unsalable produce. Contact Gary in produce, or the store manager at mgr0430@shaws.com, or call 241-4113. |

Iron-stomached entrepreneurs, has the state of Vermont got an offer for you. The state’s mobile slaughter house is up for sale, and
interested buyers can place bids at the online auction house being used
to sell the unit.
Officially known as the “Vermont Agency of Agriculture
Mobile Poultry Processing Unit,” the portable rig has a daily processing
capacity of 250 chickens or 100 turkeys.
The unit – it looks a little bit like a windowless single-wide –
had been under lease by Spring Hill Poultry, but the owner there has
decided not to renew. The agency is making the hard sell in a press release fired off to news outlets yesterday:
“With the market for locally produced poultry and rabbit continuing
to rise, this piece of infrastructure offers a great business
opportunity,” the release promises.
The state commissioned the trailer-sized unit in 2008, matching
$93,000 in state money with a grant from the Castanea Foundation. State
officials apparently want to unload the thing for good now, though the
Agency of Agriculture will offer ongoing trouble-shooting assistance to
whoever buys it.
The mobile unit can be docked at farms or fairgrounds, or any other place with decent numbers of slaughter-ready poultry.
To check it out in person, head over to the north end of the
Waterbury State Complex parking lot sometime between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
on Wednesday, Jan. 11. RSVPs would be appreciated, and you can do so by
contacting Chelsea Bardot Lewis at (802) 828-3360, or
chelsea.lewis@state.vt.us.
